What is Select Soccer all about?
Select (or Division III) soccer is for the experienced and dedicated players and parents who are willing to commit extra time to practice and a much longer season (32 or more games vs. 10 games for Recreation team schedule). This includes traveling to play games in an expanded league area, as well as traveling to weekend tournaments throughout Northern California. Practices begin in June and weekend tournament play begins in August. This mean you will need to plan your vacations accordingly to avoid having your player missing tournaments in August.
Select Game Schedule
- Tournament Play begins in August.
- League Play begins in September and ends mid November.
- District Cup play in early December
- Association Cup plays in January (depending on the age group)
Playing on a Select Team
Players must tryout and be invited to join a select team. You must participate in a minimum of one tryout to be considered for selection to a OYSC Select team. You are encouraged to attend them all.
All Select Player will need to registar with team head coach or attend registration dates in spring. Any questions about registration please inquire the Club Registrar.
Based on League rules, no player may be assured or offered a place on a team until all tryouts by said team have been completed. Registration for the OYSC will still be open at the end of tryouts.
How will the Proposed CYSA League Changes Affect Select Soccer?
In June 2009, CYSA established a framework for a state-wide playing league for all levels of competition. The latest information we have is that this program will be phased in over the next two years.
OYSC is part of the American River Youth Soccer League and the League sponsors a competative (or Division I) soccer program. This competative program is called the American River FC and, along with the other competative (or Division I) programs in CYSA North, will start the new CYSA Playing league this year.
For 2010 OYSC will continue to form Select soccer teams. In 2011, these "Select" teams will be the new Bronze or Copper playing leagues teams. Our very good teams may earn their way to play in the Silver playing league in 2012 and beyond. The Silver and Gold playing leagues will be those leagues for teams formed by League wide tryouts, what are now Competitive teams. OYSC and ARYSL still expect that the teams will remain realatively unchanged and unfazed by the new playing league proposal.
OYSC will continue to support a Select type soccer program for those experienced players who want more than what recreation soccer has to offer.
As in the past where teams are placed in League divisions based on their play and records, teams will be promoted and regulated by their previous years record of play. This system has proven to work in Southern California and the Bay Area's Golden State Soccer League. It is posible that Competative teams could move down to the Broonze level, just as Select teams could move up to Silver, but it will be for very few teams and may not occur for a couple of years.
The big benefit will be that teams can play in higher level tournaments (silver and gold) if they so choose.
