Cancelled: Fall 2020 Recreational Season

After much thought and discussion, we regret to announce the cancellation of Orangevale Youth Soccer Club's 2020 Recreational Soccer season.

In collaboration with the other clubs in Folsom Lake Soccer League (Folsom Soccer Club and Rancho Cordova Soccer Club), we decided that it is in the best interest of our players, coaches, families, and community to cancel the normal recreational season to allow more time before resuming activities that may promote the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  You may have noticed that we're one of the last leagues and clubs to make this decision.  By waiting, we hoped that things would improve enough for local government officials, state officials, and our parent soccer organization, California Youth Soccer Association, to clearly map out when and how we could safely return to play.  Unfortunately, none of that has happened yet... and we can't have a season without it.

Making this decision wasn't easy – and we have attempted to answer some of the questions you have been asking while providing a little background to our current condition:

What about refunds?  All registration fees we have collected will be refunded in full.  You will be receiving an email message from one of our Registrars regarding the various methods of reimbursement we are currently developing based on the method you paid your registration.  Please be patient during this process as we are working with several services to provide the most secure methods of reimbursing registration fees.

What about competitive teams?  As recreational soccer clubs within the Folsom Lake Soccer League, Orangevale Youth Soccer Club, Folsom Soccer Club and Rancho Cordova Soccer Club, do not have competitive soccer programs.  The Folsom Lake Surf Club provides our league’s competitive soccer program.  As of today, they have not canceled their season and are currently holding training sessions under the strict guidelines set by the State of California, Sacramento County, United States Youth Soccer Association and United States Soccer Club.  These training sessions limit the number of participants in each session (10), do not allow physical contact, maintain social distancing and follow strict personnel and equipment sanitization requirements.  In order to have a season (play games), they will need to follow yet-to-be-determined guidelines for games from these organizations.

If Comp is not canceled, why is Rec canceled?  Orangevale Youth Soccer Club does not make decisions for other clubs.  Like all recreational soccer organizations, we rely heavily on a large community of volunteers to administer and coach a significant number of teams.  Each volunteer needs to complete applications, pass background checks and coaches also need to complete online player safety certification courses .  Those requirements take time and money.  Given the high level of ongoing uncertainty regarding the return to play for youth sports, we did not feel it was appropriate to ask volunteers to engage in this process without a high likelihood that a recreational season was possible.

Referees. As we all know there are three things needed for kids to play soccer games in our system, two teams and referees. At this time, the California North Referees Association has not cleared any of their members to officiate youth soccer matches (recreational or competitive) for the 2020 season.

When things improve, could we still play soccer this fall?  Perhaps.  However, there wouldn't be enough time to form teams and organize traditional league games.  It may be possible for us to organize other types of soccer activities (training sessions, play dates with scrimmages, etc.) if they can be done within the guidelines provided by local government officials, state officials, and California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) - when those guidelines become available. We are committed to provide some sort of soccer experience for your children this fall if possible and will do our best to keep you informed as things develop and decisions are made by the state, county and CYSA.
